At Case Training, everything we do is focused on empowering adults with learning disabilities to live more independent, fulfilling lives. That’s why teaching life skills (practical, social and emotional) is at the heart of our approach.
Independence means different things to different people. For some, it’s learning how to cook a meal or use public transport. For others, it’s managing money, making new friends or speaking up in a group. Whatever the goal, Case is here to help our students get there in a supportive and person-centred way.
Building confidence through practical skills
Everyday tasks like cooking, cleaning, shopping or doing the laundry may seem simple to some, but for many people they require careful guidance, practice and confidence-building. At Case, we break down these skills into manageable steps, always working at the individual’s pace.
We run sessions that cover everything from preparing meals and planning shopping lists, to personal hygiene and keeping your living space clean and safe. These skills are essential not just for independent living, but for feeling proud and in control of your day-to-day life.
Money management and decision-making
Being able to manage your own money is a key part of independence. That’s why we offer sessions on budgeting, using money safely, and understanding the value of everyday items. We also talk about recognising scams and knowing when and how to ask for help with financial matters.
More broadly, we encourage good decision-making, as this gives people the tools and confidence to make choices that work for them. It could be what to wear in the morning, how to respond in a tricky social situation, or a wide range of other seemingly small decisions that make a huge difference.
Travel training and getting out and about
Freedom of movement can open up a world of opportunities. At Case, we support people to learn how to use public transport safely, understand timetables, and build confidence in getting from one place to another on their own or with friends.
Even short journeys can be a big step towards independence. Whether it’s going to the shops, attending an appointment or meeting someone for a coffee, it all adds up to a stronger sense of self-reliance and connection with the wider community.
Communication and self-advocacy
We also place a strong emphasis on communication skills. That could mean helping someone to speak more clearly, use assistive technology, or simply feel confident enough to express their preferences and opinions.Being able to speak up for yourself is a vital part of independent living, and something we celebrate and encourage at every stage of someone’s journey with Case.
Why it matters
When someone learns how to cook a favourite meal, travel to a new place or confidently manage their money, it’s more than just a task completed. It’s also a boost in confidence, a step forward in independence, and a moment of real pride. At Case, we believe that everyone has the right to live the life they choose. By teaching skills for independence, we’re helping people move closer to that goal, one step at a time.
