James’s Story

Background

James Gibbons joined Case in September 2018. Like many, he experienced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. When restrictions were lifted, James was reluctant to return to the Case building, feeling anxious about re-engaging with in-person activities.

To support his reintroduction, a phased return was agreed upon. James began by attending the Grow allotment for a few hours each week. This setting provided a calm, outdoor environment, helping him slowly rebuild his routine and sense of connection.

Initial Challenges

Upon returning, it was evident that James needed support in building confidence and developing social skills. He found it difficult to interact with others and needed encouragement to engage in group settings.

Progress and Development

James was introduced to the Health and Wellbeing department, where he worked closely with staff member Josh. Through participation in walking groups and sports activities, James began to thrive in a team environment. He demonstrated enthusiasm, commitment, and a growing sense of belonging.

In addition to this, James joined the Independent Living team, where he started developing vital life skills. His work in this department includes:

  • Healthy eating education
  • Home management tasks (laundry – washing, drying, folding, ironing)
  • Meal planning, food shopping, correct food storage
  • Cooking and food preparation

These activities have not only improved James’s practical abilities but have also contributed to his increased independence and self-esteem.

Current Status

James now attends regularly, engages well with peers and staff, and is a valued member of both the Health and Wellbeing and Independent Living teams. His positive attitude and willingness to learn continue to drive his progress.

Future Goals

James’s future development goals include:

  • Continuing to improve his practical life skills
  • Further building his confidence and independence
  • Exploring new opportunities to realise his full potential
