Carl’s Story

Background

Carl Parker has been attending Case since 2010, engaging with various departments over the years. Carl experiences challenges with speech and can be reluctant to engage in conversation, particularly with people he does not know well. Despite these challenges, Carl has shown long-term commitment to his development and growth.

In 2024, Carl joined the newly opened Community Room. This transition marked a significant turning point in his journey, providing a supportive environment where he has felt comfortable and safe to express himself.

Progress and Achievements

Since joining the Community Room, Carl has made remarkable progress in several key areas:

  • Communication and Social Engagement: Initially very quiet and withdrawn, Carl now actively takes part in group conversations. He has gained the confidence to select topics of interest and contribute meaningfully to discussions.
  • Participation in Activities: Carl enjoys hands-on activities such as crafts and cooking/baking sessions. These have helped him express his creativity and build relationships within the group.
  • Time Management: Carl previously struggled with returning from lunch on time, which impacted his ability to fully participate in afternoon sessions. He has since improved significantly in this area, now returning promptly and prepared to engage.
  • Multi-Department Involvement: In addition to the Community Room, Carl attends the Independent Living Skills program on Mondays and Creative Arts on Thursdays. These settings provide practical and creative outlets that align with Carl’s strengths, supporting his personal development.
