Carl’s Story

Background

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Magda—a vibrant performer with Down’s Syndrome and a hearing impairment—thrived on stage. She sang with confidence, danced with joy, and connected naturally with her audience. Her charisma, warmth, and energy made her a standout presence in any performance.

Impact of the Pandemic
The effects of the pandemic were deeply felt by Magda. The sudden isolation and suspension of services disrupted her routine and severely impacted her self-confidence. Once eager to perform, Magda became withdrawn. Her stage presence diminished, and she stopped singing and dancing altogether, preferring instead to remain on the sidelines.

Joining CASE
In August 2023, Magda joined Case and began participating in the Discovery programme—an initiative focused on creative engagement through personalised, music-based activities. Initially, Magda was hesitant and reserved. She avoided warm-up activities, declined to join social games, hid her face during performances, and consistently refrained from singing or dancing.

Transformation Through Creative Support
With consistent, compassionate support from the CASE team, including one-to-one encouragement and structured creative sessions, Magda gradually began to re-engage. Over time, she rediscovered her voice—both literally and figuratively.

Today, Magda is once again thriving on stage:

  • She sings independently for the first time in years.
  • She moves confidently and expresses herself freely during performances.
  • She participates actively in group sessions, contributing harmonies and supporting others.
  • She has started to choreograph her own dance moves.
  • She shows emerging leadership by gently guiding peers who may be unsure of lyrics or steps.

Conclusion
Magda’s journey from withdrawn to expressive performer is a powerful testament to the impact of inclusive, tailored creative support. The transformation she has undergone reflects the knowledge, commitment, and empathetic approach of the CASE team.

Her rediscovery is ongoing—and the possibilities ahead for Magda are both inspiring and limitless. This case highlights what becomes possible when individuals are supported in environments that honour their abilities, celebrate their potential, and empower their voice.
