Our outdoor classroom is officially under construction

It’s fantastic to finally be able to share this news with you all; our NEW outdoor classroom is now under construction!

The classroom will be located at our beloved allotment on Clough Road in Hull. It’s set to be the ideal space for Trainees who love spending time outdoors – they’ll be able to shelter from the wet weather whilst still enjoying the fresh air and being close to nature. The space will also double-up as a learning centre, providing sessions on topics such as healthy eating and how to grow and harvest your own fruit & veggies.

Our outdoor classroom will be open to Trainees later on this year. We can’t wait to welcome you and your loved ones!

All about our allotment…

The allotment has so much to offer with its beehives, flowers, fruit trees, and vegetable patches. There is space for Trainees to learn and develop their gardening skills, and once the fresh produce is ripe and ready – they can take the sweet, spicy, herby, and other gorgeous flavours back to the Centre for cooking and baking! The opportunities are endless.

The benefits of outdoor learning spaces

According to the Learning Outside the Classroom manifesto, switching it up and doing classes outdoors can have a positive effect on learners.

Here are some of our favourite reasons for learning outdoors:

·       It gives Trainees a choice of learning environment – some individuals are born to be outdoorsy, and it’s fantastic to be able to facilitate their preferences

·       It allows Trainees greater access to the six `pathways to learning` – see, hear, taste, touch, smell, and do

·       It enables Trainees to begin to adjust to the world beyond the Centre

·       It allows Trainees to soak up the sun, breathe in the fresh air, and feel the calming notes of nature

Learning outdoors is especially beneficial for individuals with learning disabilities and SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability), as the natural environment is thought to help them relax along with improving concentration.
